Audio Mixing Tips

31 Jan

Here are some general tips for mixing that I have learnt over the years.

When mixing it is important to check your mix on a variety of speakers and not just your studio monitors. While studio monitors can sound great that can sometimes leave a false impression of how good your mix really sounds. Often studio monitors provide a great clarity and detail to the music that you are listening to. Those little subtle effects in the background of your mix may not be heard as clear as you think in a regular stereo or on a pair of cheap iPod headphones.

Check your mix on everything you have from your deluxe home theatre sound system to a cheap and nasty boom box or car stereo. I often check my mixes on my mp3 player with cheap headphones. The mp3 player has a bass boost which in the past has told me that my mixes are too bassy turning them to mush. Now I am more aware of what the bass levels should be when mixing on my studio monitors.

Another thing to do while checking your mix on your monitors and your other sound systems around the house or in the car is to listen to the mixes at different volume levels. What sounds great at a moderate level may be too harsh or boomy when cranked up or that vocal track may be buried when listening to the track at a low volume.

Your ears can get tired while mixing so it is a good idea to have a break after a few hours to refresh your ears. Go and have a coffee or for a walk around the block and you will discover that you can hear things a lot more clearly rather than turning what may be an OK mix into a terrible one as your ears loose perspective.

One other little mixing trick is to listen to the mix outside the room. I often listen to mixes in the hallway outside my studio to give me a better perspective of how all the instruments and parts sit in a mix. Sometimes it can be hard to judge levels and sounds with monitors right in front of your head after a few hours.

Choosing the Best Car Audio System

29 Jan

The basic components of a high-quality car stereo system are an AM/FM tuner, a CD player, an amplifier (optional but recommended) and great speakers.

Rule: No auto audio can equal the performance of fine home equipment. The car compartment is small, besieged with engine and traffic noises, and surrounded with competing electrical signals. And all of this in a moving environment. A welter of technical and personal choices dictate the final package.

General guidelines: Shop around. Car audio components are often discounted. Check mail-order houses and the Internet for the best buys.

Essential: Deal with reputable businesses and buy name brands. Make sure you can exchange or return components in case they prove incompatible or do not fit into the car. Remember each unit must be installed and may require custom mounting accessories. Keep personal tastes in mind. Rock and country music fans usually prefer stronger bass ranges. Classical music requires good mid and treble.

How to allocate your spending: 40% to 50% for tuner/tape player, 25% to 30% for amplifier, 25% to 30% for speakers (unlike home gear, for which half the recommended expenditure may go for speakers alone).

General recommendations: Components are a better deal than manufacturer-installed original sound equipment. Good manufacturer-installed gear can cost $1,000, a price that will usually bring you far better sound if spent on components. Try to find a dealer that has set up a sound room to hear and compare different systems.

New-car buyer strategy: Buyers planning to purchase components should insist on a delete-option clause, eliminating the installed radio cost.

In-dash versus under-dash components. Under-dash components are easily installed.

Overriding disadvantage: A thief can slip out the under-dash gear as easily as an ashtray. Choose in-dash tuner/CD players unless you want to stow the components in the trunk each time you leave the car. (If you still prefer an under-dash system, Sony components are top-notch ones.)

Amplifiers: Most auto-sound packages benefit from amplifiers that strengthen bass and high-treble tones.

Problems: Amplifiers are bulky and often must be installed under a seat or in the trunk. Unless your tuner has a bypass circuit permitting you to plug into the preamplifier, your costly amplifier will only boost the distorted output of the built-in amplifier.

Smart buying: Look for amplifiers measuring power in watts (w) per channel in terms of distortion (THD). Goal: About five watts per channel at 1 % distortion or less. To get this, the amplifier may require 50 watts per channel because few operate at better than 10% efficiency in a car.

Bi-amplifiers: They offer separate power boosts for bass and treble ranges. Bi-amplification may be called for when separate bass and treble speakers are installed.

Speakers: Speakers must be compatible with amplifiers. Their power capacity should be slightly higher than amplifier. Example: Get 60w speakers for a 50w /ch amplifier. One way to be sure of speaker/amplifier compatibility is to purchase them as a package.

Stereo sound requires at least two speakers. Many enthusiasts choose four. Non-directional bass speakers are best placed in the factory cutouts in the rear window shelf. Next best placement: In rear doors. Treble speakers can be mounted in front door panels or under dash.

Installation: Unless you are highly skilled electronics hobbyist, have the auto-sound system professionally installed. Allow $150 to $200 for installation, and get a satisfaction guaranteed agreement.

Audio for Films – 10 Easy Tips

27 Jan

Films are an audio visual version, yet most film makers focus solely on the visual part. They tend to forget that without a good audio quality the film would totally loose its impact!

None of your scenes would create that horror or terror or tickle without the right background score! Some of you might think that it can happen just like that – like a magic – but, the news is that nothing in film making happens like a magic!

For a good audio impact what you need is a trained audiophile – a professional who loves to handle the boom of several wanted and unwanted noises with a microphone all through the day.

You must know that almost all the cameras have an in-built mic that records all the dialogues delivered and the other sounds during the shoot but this mic is one of a very poor quality. So, ultimately every film maker lands up working with some external mics.

Here are a few tips to understand your external mics better and enhance the audio quality of your film:

1. Look for a professional in the field who would guide you through all the technical requisites.

2. In case you are planning a lower budget, try working with a friend who is a fresher in the field. He might be inexperienced. But a well trained young talent works wonders at times, better than the far experienced ones.

3. Invest in at least 2 good quality remote mics that must sync in with your camera. You make your actors wear these remote mics on their body. In order to make them work well, you must place them correctly.

4. Placing the remote mic is rather tricky, but once you know the right way, it is just another daily job for you. You must use your fist with the thumb extended up & pinkie extended down just like the ol’ hang’s loose hand sign. Now, place your thumb under the actor’s chin. Now where your extended pinkie ends, is where you place the mic. It means that the mic close enough in order to capture good sound, but far from enough from the actor’s mouth thereby preventing popping and sibilance.

5. For the group scenes, a mic with a boom is just excellent. The audiophiles have a real tough job that is to handle a boom for days together. But these professionals are trained for the same and are really passionate about it.

6. After the shoot and the recording of the sound done there simultaneously, these sounds are carried back to the studio. Here the film maker edits these sounds so as to match with the images. Unlike the olden days of film making, now the filmmakers have ‘the Non-Linear Systems to Edit the Non-Linear Sounds.’ Popularly this technology is known as the NLE – it enables you to move your sound clips back & forth within the video itself.

7. The sound tracks and sound effects add mood and life to the film. It is always advisable to create fresh music for the film rather than copying it from some where else. Using recorded music could lead to major legal hassles that would affix your film in the post production stage only.

8. Copyrighting laws are quite strict and violating them could cost you far too much to imagine. Remember, anything that belongs to another artist/s or their agent/s, that is if they have an ownership right to the music, no one can use the same without their written permission. There are some ways around this law but not as many and not that easy as well.

9. You can only use the music that is from the public domain. You can only use the music piece or image with no ownership attached to the same, that is there are no person/s or organization/s to claim the proprietary interest of that music or image.

10. To get original work it is always good to hire a professional. To go economical and work rather comfortable try working with a fresher or a friend who is talented enough to compose interesting soundtracks and effects. These days you shall find many budding composers & musicians in search of a chance to work for a film to expose their talent and art.

Audio Books and MP3 Players – A Perfect Couple?

27 Jan

Most of the Mp3 players’ manufacturers plan their product for the purpose of listening to music. However, in the past couple of years more and more MP3 players are used for listening to audio books. There is a difference between the needs using the MP3 players for audio books and for MP3 music. If you consider using your new MP3 player for listening to audio books take into account the following considerations:

1. Behavior after interruption – This is the most important consideration you should take into account. When listening to audio books not as listening to music, you want to continue listening from the point you have stopped and not from the beginning. Most MP3 player do not have the option to continue from the exact point in the audio book but from the beginning of the same file. However, some MP3 players do not have a continuation option and start from the beginning of the audio book after an interruption.

When you shop a new MP3 player check it – play an audio book, take off the batteries, then put the batteries back and check if the MP3 player start from the beginning of the same file or from the beginning of the audio book.

2. Memory – The required memory depends on the MP3 format of the audio book, the length of the audio book and the number of audio books you wish to upload to your MP3 player.

MP3 players usually come with a flash memory. You can add a memory card to most of the players. The minimum memory required is 128Mb (less will be enough for a short audio book of about 6 hours). Try getting the biggest memory possible of a combination of flash memory and memory card.

3. Volume – The loudness is one the main problems in relation with audio books. Some MP3 players have an annoying limitation of the high volume. Hence, It is almost impossible to listen to the audio book in a noisy surrounding as an airplane, train or a gym room. Our advice is to put the head phones in the shop and make sure there is a loud volume that will be sufficient for listening to audio books.

Yet, Most MP3 players make the experience of listening to an audio book far better than listening to audio books on CD and books on tape. Try it, you can even download free audio books and get a free MP3 player.

Audio Effects-Noise Gate & Flange

22 Jan

Continuing the audio effects series, again, we all know of audio effects and what they generally are supposed to do. They are used to manipulate audio in ways that are not available with traditional playing and recording techniques. If you’re like me, and enjoy dabbling in audio production, you’re probably familiar with all the basic effects and maybe some other types. Noise gate will be one of the topics of discussion today. Noise gate, what the heck is that? If that was your first reaction, you’re not alone. Please don’t worry; we will be demystifying this subject later on in the article. We will also be discussing flange, which is a more standard and widely used audio effect. So, in today’s article we will be discussing both noise gate and flange effects, how they work and why they work the way they do.

Noise Gate

Basically, noise gate is a device or software logic that is used to manage the volume of an audio signal, in recording studios and in sound reinforcement. They are also used by musicians, in a portable form, to control amplification noise. At its most simple form it controls noise by only allowing sound to pass through it at a certain set threshold. Think of it as a literal gate; when the gate is open sound can pass, when the gate is closed no signal is allowed through. More robust noise gate units have extra controls, I.E. attack, sustain, decay, release. This is so that you can further control the gating of your audio. Say you’d like to have the gate applied in a hard fashion, you would set a short attack and a short release, so on and so forth. Noise gates are often used to isolate background noise from live recordings in order to eliminate them from the final copy.

Flange

Flange is related to the phasing effect produced by a, well, phaser effects unit. It is produced when two identical signals are mixed together, with one of the signals time-delayed by a small and gradually changing amount. The amount is usually equal to or less than 20 milliseconds. Peaks and notches are produced in the combined frequency spectrum, related in a linear harmonic series. Part of the output signal is fed back in and resonates, intensifying the peaks and notches. This effect was originally generated with 3 three headed tape machines. Two of the tape machines would play the signal, obviously somewhat out of synch, and the third tape machine would record the output. The modern version of the effect is created using DSP (digital signal processing) technology.

This is the second part in my continuing series on audio effects. Today we discussed noise gate and flange, we’ll be moving on some more advanced effects later on. I hope that this helped you all understand the basic functionality of these two effects, ultimately making your next foray into audio editing a bit less intimidating.
